A great article from the Tinkergarten blog, “More than Mudpies“, hails Earth Day as an opportunity to teach our children how to honor our planet in all of it’s beauty and wonder.

While we have young children, Earth Day can be quite a challenge to teach them about big picture importance while retaining their attention. Tinkergarten’s favorite way to engage the kids is to celebrate! Throw the Earth a birthday party! Children LOVE birthday parties and what better way to relate to their world in a positive way that they can embrace and take familiar action?

Spring has long been known to host celebrations of the Earth as it is a time of year symbolizing ‘rebirth’ and ‘renewal.’ Earth Day was officially declared on April 22, 1970. Check out this “CBS News” clip with the late Walter Cronkite from Earth Day 1970:

How to Celebrate Our Earth’s Birthday

Make it cause for celebration by incorporating these activities for your families’ Earth Day birthday party shared in the Tinkergarten Activity: Happy Birthday, Earth! One of our favorites is making the Earth a mud cake for the party and gathering as many stick candles as you can in appreciation for the age of the Earth!

1. Plant the seeds.
2. Let’s have a party!
3. Whip up treats!
4. Deck out the area.
5. What could be our present?
6. Feast and sing.

In a previous article, we really appreciate the ideas suggested in their list, “8 Super Satisfying Ways to Help Save the Planet,” which take the honor of Earth Day to an even more meaningful level.

1. 10 Minutes in Nature
2. Eat Outdoors
3. Walk Barefoot
4. Focus on the Little Things (in Nature)
5. Pretend to Be Animals
6. Befriend a Tree
7. Party like Wild Things
8. Give Thanks and Show Gratitude

About Tinkergarten Classes

Parents are embracing these outdoor curricula as they foster teamwork and collaboration in problem solving and approaching projects while teaching empathy and social awareness and respect to others and the environment. Children learn with a multi-sensory approach about many subjects and topics throughout each season. This past season, many families participated together to learn about habitats, building shelters, night and darkness, painting with natural pigments found in nature and appreciating personalities and feelings through pretend play. Friendships were forged and our little learners matured into their newfound skills.
